Area students compete in regional math competition at Eastern

WILBURTON, OK (Feb. 14, 2014) – Middle school students representing four area schools recently competed at the 2014 Southeast Region MATHCOUNTS competition at Eastern Oklahoma State College in Wilburton.

The MATHCOUNTS Competition is a national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program that promotes mathematics achievement through a series of “bee” style contests. After working throughout the school year, students enrolled in sixth, seventh and eighth grade compete at four levels including school, region, state and nationals. The top two teams and an All-Star Squad and a coach advance to the state competition on March 1 in Tulsa.


The team from Wilburton earned first place honors and was named Most Improved School. The team will advance to the state competition on March 1 in Tulsa. Team members include (standing, left to right) Gilles Goddard, Tyler Crabtree, Devon Cox, Coach Mary Kendrick (seated, left to right) Dylan Johnson, Anthony Hernandez and Levi Knight. Crabtree was named the top eighth grade student in the competition and Hernandez and Johnson were named to the All-Star Squad.


The Stilwell team earned second place honors and will advance to the state competition on March 1 in Tulsa. Team members include (standing, left to right) Coach Beth Essary, Claudia Jones, Patrick Huling, Jacob Brown (seated, left to right) Kevin Markovich and Trenton Waters. Waters was also named to the All-Star Squad and Markovich will serve as an alternate.


The Canadian team members include (standing, left to right) Paul Brewster, Tyler Johnson, Corey Hoskins, Dominic Hernandez, Jacob Coffman, Coach Shana Grubis (seated, left to right) Serena Woodard, Brentleigh Rousey, Lily Romero, Neva Northcutt and Dalton Lenox.


The Kiowa team members include (standing, left to right) Cody Thomas, Trevor Stokes, Shelby Linscott, Coach Patricia Griffin, (seated, left to right) Will Foris, Peyton Edwards and Jacy Wills. Foris was named the top seventh grade student in the competition and earned a spot on the All-Star Squad.


The All-Star Squad team members include (standing, left to right) Anthony Hernandez, Wilburton; Will Foris, Kiowa; Trenton Waters, Stilwell; Coach Beth Essary, Stilwell; (seated, left to right) Kevin Markovich, Stilwell; and Dylan Johnson, Wilburton.
