Eastern federal grant representatives attend 2013 Higher Education Program Directors’ Meeting

Representing Eastern Oklahoma State at the 2013 HEP Project Directors’ Meeting were GEAR UP Professional Development Coordinator Debbie Walters; NASNTI Project Director Cindy Shero; GEAR UP Project Director Linda Morgan; NASNTI Administrative Assistant Teresa Sellers; and Student Support Services Project Director Sue Lovett.
WILBURTON, OK (March 31, 2013) – Five Eastern Oklahoma State College federal grants representatives attended the mandatory 2013 Higher Education Program Project Directors’ Meeting March 26–29 in Washington, DC. More than 3,100 attended the meeting, representing 28 different federal grant programs.

Attending were Sue Lovett, Director of Student Support Services (SSS); Cindy Shero, Director of the Native American–Serving Non–Tribal Intuitions (NASNTI); Teresa Sellers, Administrative Assistant of NASNTI; Linda Morgan, Director of Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP); and Debbie Walters, Professional Development Coordinator for GEAR UP.

The theme of the meeting was Strategies for Educating the 21st Century Student. It focused on the changing higher education landscape, including the types of students who attend and the way in which content is delivered in classrooms across the county. The conference provided new ideas and techniques designed to help attendees reassess how to meet the evolving needs of students.

Linda Byrd–Johnson, the Senior Director in the Student Service Area of the U.S. Department of Education, brought opening remarks. The conference was convened by James Laws, Jr., the Chief of Staff, Higher Education Programs, U.S. Department of Education. The Deputy Assistant Secretary for Higher Education Programs, U.S. Department of Education, Debra Saunders–White, addressed attendees throughout the conference. David Bergeron, the Acting Assistant Secretary, Office of Postsecondary Education, U.S. Department of Education brought greetings. Opening session speakers were Congressman Chaka Fattah, 2nd District of Pennsylvania and Congressman Joaquin Castro, 20th District of Texas.

Participants attended various tracks designed for their particular grant program.

On the second day of the conference, David Downey, Management Analyst, Office of Risk Management Service, U.S. Department of Education, provided an overview of grants management. James Runcie, Chief Operating Officer, and Jeff Baker, Director, Policy Liaison and Implementation, Federal Student Aid (FSA), U.S. Department of Education presented vital information about student aid.

The final day of the conference, Martha Kanter, Under Secretary, U.S. Department of Education and Valerie Jarrett, Senior Advisor to President Barack Obama, provided the keynotes.

Grant representatives also met with U.S. Department of Education program officers during the conference.
