Eastern student-athletes receive 2017 Larry Stone honors
WILBURTON, OK (May 15, 2017) – Eastern Oklahoma State College student-athletes recently gathered for the 49th Annual Larry Stone Athletics Awards Banquet, where three recipients were awarded special honors.
The awards are named for the late Larry Stone of Jay, Okla., a popular two-sport athlete at Eastern Oklahoma State College in the early 1960s. Stone participated in both football and basketball for the Mountaineers and was known for his unselfish attitude and commitment to his teams. Stone, a Marine lieutenant, was killed in combat while on patrol in Vietnam.
For the past 49 years, Eastern has honored his legacy by presenting his namesake award to a male and female student-athlete who exemplifies the same characteristics as Stone. In addition to the annual awards, a memorial scholarship was also awarded to an Eastern student-athlete.
Sophomores To’Lishia Weasah and Treshawn Gause were selected for the 2017 Larry Stone Award. Weasah is a sophomore women’s basketball player from Dallas, Texas, who graduated this spring with a 3.00 GPA and an associate of arts degree in general studies. On the court, she scored 183 points and gathered 109 rebounds.
Gause is a sophomore men’s basketball player from Springdale, Ark., also majoring in general studies with a 3.11 GPA. He holds the school record for assists in a season at 194 and was ranked No. 2 in the nation for assists as well.
Freshman A’Breon Jackson was selected to receive the new Larry Stone Athletic Scholarship. Jackson, a women’s basketball player from Hugo, Okla., will continue her studies in nursing with a 3.57 GPA. In this past season, she scored 156 points and and had 23 assists.
The awards were presented by Stone’s former teammate and Eastern alumnus Dr. Henry Migliore and EOSC athletic director Kirk Kelley.
