Eastern’s Karen Harrison named chair of Council of Instruction
WILBURTON, OK (Oct. 10, 2013) – Dr. Karen Harrison, Eastern Oklahoma State College’s vice president of Academic Affairs, has been named the chair of the Council of Instruction for the 2013-2014 academic year.
The Council of Instruction serves as an advisory group to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education (OSRHE). The council is made up of chief academic officers from each of the 25 colleges and universities in the state system.
“Being a member of the Council of Instruction has been a tremendous learning experience. In addition to addressing important policy issues related to our academic mission, our meetings provide a forum for open exchange of ideas that improve student learning,” Harrison said. “I am happy to be a part of this group and honored to serve as chair this year.”
The Council on Instruction considers academic and related issues affecting Oklahoma higher education. In addition, the council proposes academic and related policy and procedures and serves as the principal statewide advisory council rendering advice and counsel to the chancellor, other advisory groups and the entire state system.
Harrison, of McAlester, has previously served as the chair of the Council on Instruction for all two-year colleges in the state system. She began her career at Eastern as a science faculty member in 1998. She served as Honors program coordinator for several years and was chair of the Science and Mathematics Division for two years before being named vice president in 2007. She chaired the self-study team for Eastern’s Higher Learning Commission (HLC) comprehensive accreditation visit in 2006 and currently serves as the college’s accreditation liaison officer for HLC.
