Outstanding graduates honored during Eastern’s 2014 Commencement Ceremony
WILBURTON, OK (May 9, 2014) – Eastern Oklahoma State College recognized six Outstanding Graduates during the college’s commencement ceremony on May 9 in Wilburton. One graduate from each of the six college divisions is selected each year for the honor.
The 2014 Outstanding Graduates include Chelsea Hofegartner of Harrah, Agriculture Division; Hailey Luker of McAlester, Behavioral and Social Science Division; Jeanette Gonzalez of Wilburton, Business Division; Jamie Fink of McAlester, Language, Humanities and Education Division; Jenny Nelson of Haileyville, Nursing Division; and Stanley Wilkinson of Haileyville, Science and Mathematics Division.
Chesea Hofegartner - Agriculture Division
Division Dean Eddie Woods presented the Outstanding Graduate Award
for the Agriculture Division to Chelsea Hofegartner.
Hofegartner graduated in the top 10 percent of her class with a double major in environmental science and agronomy. She has a 3.89 overall grade point average and was recently named the Outstanding Forestry/Natural Resources/Environmental Science Student and the Outstanding Agronomy Student for 2013-2014. She was also recently named to the 2014 All-Oklahoma Academic Team.
During her time at Eastern, Hofegartner has served in leadership roles in numerous clubs and organizations. She is a member of the Eastern Honors Program and has served as vice president of fellowship in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, Eastern Student Government Representative for the Math and Science Club, and member of the Aggie Club and the Agriculture Ambassador Leadership Program. She is the recipient of the OSU Regents Transfer Scholarship, the H.F. “Pat” Murphy Memorial Transfer Scholarship, the Joseph Fleming Memorial Transfer Scholarship, and the SBO Cafeteria Scholarship.
Chelsea is the daughter of Tracy and Jerry Hofegartner of Harrah. She plans to attend Oklahoma State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in soil and water resources. Hofegartner is currently working with the university on a student exchange program to become the first OSU student to study abroad at Lincoln University in Christchurch, New Zeland during her senior year.
Hailey Luker - Behavioral and Social Sciences Division
Division Dean Marilynn Duncan presented the Outstanding Graduate Award for the Behavioral and Social Science Division to Hailey Luker.
Luker graduated in the top 10 percent of her class with an associate of arts degree in psychology/sociology and a 4.0 overall grade point average. She has been a member of the Eastern cheer team for two years and was a Larry Stone Award nominee in 2014.
As president of the Psychology and Social Sciences Club, Luker helped plan and participated in various campus activities such as Mr. Eastern and the Toys for Tots holiday drive. She also volunteered in the community, singing in local nursing homes, assisting with the Hartshorne Elementary Halloween Carnival and judging cheerleading tryouts at Haileyville and Eufaula High Schools.
Hailey is the daughter of Rodney and Kathy Luker of McAlester. She plans to attend East Central University and pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology and counseling.
Jeanette Gonzalez - Business Division
Division Dean Kay Langham presented the Outstanding Business Division Graduate award to Jeanette Gonzalez.
Gonzalez graduated in the top 10 percent of her class with an associate of science degree in business administration and a 4.0 overall grade point average. During her time at Eastern, Gonzalez has served in leadership roles in numerous clubs and organizations. She is a member of the Eastern Honors Program and has served as secretary for the Eastern Student Government Association, vice president of leadership for Phi Theta Kappa, treasurer for Photo Club, and president of Phi Beta Lambda.
Gonzalez has earned several awards and honors while attending Eastern, including being named a 2014 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Silver Scholar, a Coca Cola Leader of Promise and a member of the 2014 All-Oklahoma Academic Team. She has also received the George and Donna Nigh Public Service Scholarship, the McAlester Scottish Rite Charitable and Educational Foundation Scholarship and the Oklahoma Association of Community Colleges Scholarship.
Jeanette is the daughter of Yolanda Del Rio of Wilburton and Jesus Gonzalez of California. She plans to attend Oklahoma State University to pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting.
Jamie Fink - Language, Humanities and Education Division
Division Dean Dr. Billye Givens presented the Outstanding Graduate Award
for the Language, Humanities and Education Division to Jamie Fink.
Fink graduated with an associate of arts degree in mass communication and a 3.63 overall grade point average. He is a member of Eastern’s Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. During his time at Eastern, Fink served as editor of the Eastern “Statesman” student newspaper, president of the Photo Club, staff member of the “Mountaineer” yearbook staff and on-air reporter for Mountaineer Radio.
This spring, Fink earned nine individual awards at the Oklahoma Collegiate Media Association’s annual conference including first place for sports photography; third place for general news writing, sports reporting, yearbook sports writing and sports photography; and fourth place awards for feature writing, as well as feature, sports and yearbook photography.
Jamie is the son of Jon and Stephanie Fink of McAlester. He plans to attend Texas A&M Corpus Christi and pursue a bachelor’s degree in communication and media.
Jenny Nelson - Nursing Division
Director Robin Nevling presented the Outstanding Graduate Award
for the Nursing Division to Jenny Nelson.
Nelson graduated in the top 10 percent of her class with an associate of applied science degree in nursing and a 3.877 overall grade point average. Originally from Logan, Utah, she moved to Oklahoma in 2010 to attend nursing school.
Nelson earned several scholarships for her education, including the BP America Scholarship and the Puterbaugh Foundation Scholarship. She has also earned a scholarship to attend Northeastern State University to pursue her bachelor’s degree in nursing. Nelson hopes to begin work as an emergency room nurse and eventually become a school nurse.
Stanley Wilkinson - Science and Mathematics Division
Division Dean Margaret Sorrell presented the Outstanding Graduate Award
for the Science and Mathematics Division to Stanley Wilkinson.
Wilkinson graduated in the top 10 percent of his class with an associate of science degree in life science and a 3.956 overall grade point average. During his time at Eastern, he was named the Outstanding Life Science Student and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Wilkinson was also an active member of the Math and Science Club, served as a mentor to science students and assisted with Eastern’s annual Regional Science and Engineering Fair.
Wilkinson finished his degree program at Eastern in December 2013. He has already completed his first semester at the University of Oklahoma with a 4.0 grade point average. He plans to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry and then pursue a doctoral degree in physical therapy.
