Panola GEAR UP students tour CASC and the LeFlore County Museum

4/21/2014

WILBURTON, OK (April 21, 2014) – Panola eighth and ninth grade GEAR UP students traveled to Poteau recently to tour Carl Albert State College and the LeFlore County Museum. The walking tour of CASC included the Deanna Reed Center for Science and Math and the residence halls.

Next the students went to the Hotel Lowrey, home to the LeFlore County Museum. The building was built in 1922 by Wiley W. Lowrey.

The LeFlore County Museum opened in the Lowrey Hotel in 2013. On the second floor, students found Room 110, the historical ghost room. It tells the story of the specters that are said to haunt the hotel. The third floor is filled with relics from the 1800s to present day. Students visited rooms designed around specific cultures, such as the Native American, pioneer and Viking rooms. Additional war artifacts were soon on the third floor in the World War II/Korean/Vietnam room and the early military/World War I and Civil War room. Industrial history and media history were also displayed.

The field trip was sponsored by Eastern Oklahoma State College GEAR UP. Participating schools take two field trips each academic year—one to tour a college or university and one that is cultural or educational in nature.

In 2011, Eastern received a seven–year, $12.6 million federal GEAR UP grant and is in its third year of implementation.
