South teams dominate Eastern’s 42nd annual Kiamichi All-Star Classic
WILBURTON, OK (May 28, 2014) – The South teams dominated Eastern Oklahoma State College’s 42nd annual Kiamichi All-Star Classic May 23-24 in Wilburton. The South teams were victorious in all four softball, baseball and basketball games.
The Kiamichi All-Star Classic kicked off on Friday evening with the girls basketball game. The South team, coached by Justin Lowder of Wilburton, captured a close 62-60 victory over the North team, coached by Melinda Dobson of Stuart and Jennie Rutledge of Holdenville. Miranda Stiles of Kiowa scored a game-high 18 points, including six three-pointers, to claim the Most Valuable Player for the South team. Spiro’s Philicea Mack led her team with 16 points and was named the North MVP.
In another close contest, the South boys defeated the North boys 96-95. The North team, coached by Jody Hull of Haileyville, jumped out to a big first-half lead and led 57-30 at halftime. But the South team, coached by Burtchal Griffin of Haworth, took over in the second half and took their first lead of the game with less than a minute left. Broken Bow’s Kaleb Jones led all scorers with 23 points and claimed the South MVP title. Knifeis Carter of Sprio scored 12 points and was named the North MVP.
Michie Sokolosky of Wilburton and Montana Gormley of Weleetka won the three-point shooting contests, while DeShawn Jackson of Checotah won the slam-dunk contest.
The South teams continued their dominance on Saturday during the softball and baseball games.
The South team defeated the North 13-10 on the softball field. Tushka’s Kelsey Chambers earned the South MVP title after finishing four-for-four with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Kelsey Crawford of Quinton earned MVP honors for the North team with a homerun and two runs scored. The South team was coached by Paul Watts of Rattan and the North team was coached by Tara Satterfield of Quinton and Carrie Covey of Pocola.
The South boys earned their final victory of the Classic as they defeated the North boys 10-3 in baseball. Rattan’s A.J. Davis was named the South MVP after finishing two-for-two with three RBIs, two runs scored and two walks. The North MVP was Checotah’s Caleb Knight who played five innings as catcher and then pitched two innings. Tony Marris of Antlers coached the South baseball team, while Justin Bond of McAlester coached the North baseball team.
