Artificial Insemination (A.I.) Program

Mature females have been evaluated, and the selection has been made, to introduce artificial insemination to the college’s beef cattle herd on a large scale.  Following the A.I. period the females are exposed to the natural service bulls.

By the use of A.I. Eastern is taking advantage of the opportunity to expose our beef cattle herd to the very best genetics available.  Through this program the older, large framed, Simmental females are being phased out and the herd is being rebuilt to consist of moderate scale females with a high percentage of Black and/or Red Angus. 

During the transformation of Eastern’s beef cattle operation the red females will be marketed and only black heifers will be retained to expand the herd.  Future generations will be bred to Black Angus bulls to maintain black hided cattle.

Embryo Recipient Cow Program

In the past, flushing donor quality cows and having an extensive recipient program has been constrained due to budget limitations. In the spring of 2008 Eastern decided to ease into an embryo recipient program by taking some of our spring calving cows as recipients to carry embryos for a second party.  If this program is successful Eastern will consider incorporating this program on a larger scale.

Additionally, embryo transfer provides an excellent opportunity to introduce this technology to our students while minimizing risks and expenses.
