QUILTERS

QUILTERS, a play with music by Molly Newman and Barbara Damashek, with performances Thursday thru Saturday, Oct. 13-15, and again on Monday the 17th at 7:30 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium on the Wilburton campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College. Box office receipts from the Saturday night performance are designated for Eastern's Hurricane Relief fund.

According to Ruth Askew Brelsford, director, "Attendance is growing at all of our plays and this beautiful piece should be especially appealing to our audiences. This is the first time that we have attempted to add singing to our productions, other than our very popular musicals, co-produced with Eastern's music department each spring, and we are really excited about this work."

The story of a pioneer woman and her daughters, QUILTERS stitches together songs, scenes, and monologues into a beautiful patchwork design that celebrates women on the early frontier. The action depicts the daily lives of women in the early days of our country utilizing the motif of the quilts they made to keep their families warm.

"This play is both funny and sad, angry and stoic, in short, it is the story of our mothers' lives. We have spent a lot of time exploring our own family stories in preparation for this work. It has been deeply rewarding. Plus, the girls have learned to piece a quilt!" Brelsford says.

The cast, which is all female, features Dottie Minshall as Sarah, the mother.

The acting ensemble includes Maribeth Baker, sophomore, Talihina; Tiffany Craig, freshman, Wister; Carly Jones, sophomore, Talihina; Lucy Moore, sophomore, Kiowa; Tosha Sorter, freshman, Kiowa; and Julia Wynn, guest artist from McAlester.

Les Brelsford is the music director while Hara Seo, sophomore from Gwang-Ju, Korea, is the accompaniest. The pit band includes Kyle Williams, Wilburton sophomore; Adam Rainwater, Quinton freshman; Justin Crook, Crowder sophomore; and Gary Wackerly, guest artist from Red Oak.

Tickets are $3 at the door. For more information, call Ruth Askew Brelsford, 918-465-1762.
