Selection & Admission Criteria

The Associate Degree Nursing Program at Eastern Oklahoma State College has minimum criteria for admission and standards for achievement, which are to be met for retention. The standards for admission are intended to provide a reasonable assurance of student success in the program. The Selection and Retention Committee is composed of Nursing faculty with the Director of Nursing Education being the Chairperson for that committee.

ADMISSIONS
One class of generic students is admitted to the nursing program each year for the fall semester. One class of Licensed Practical Nurses, composed of students from both Wilburton and Idabel campuses, is admitted to Transition in Nursing each academic year.

Qualified applicants are selected on the basis of criteria listed. A completed application consists of an application to the nursing program as well as the school, ACT results, high school transcript or GED results, college transcripts, three letters of reference from professional individuals excluding family and friends and verification of physical qualifications.
CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION

1. The program is designed for selected women and men. Admission criteria are based on GPA, ACT, a background in lab sciences, completion of the application packet on time, and work experience. Candidates are given points according to a scale in each of these areas. A total of 14 points are possible.

A minimum GPA of 2.5 and ACT composite of 19 is required to be considered for admission. The candidates with the highest points are accepted for admission.

3. Physical Qualifications
In order to be considered for admission, all applicants will sign the ADA requirement form, which will verify their compliance with the following:

1. Have physical strength to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
2. Have visual capacity to read small print on medicine labels.
3. Have sufficient auditory perception to receive verbal communication from clients and members of the health team and to assess health needs of people through the use of monitoring devices such as stethoscopes, IV infusion pumps, cardiac monitors, fire alarms, etc.
4. Communicate in clear English speech patterns, verbal and written.
5. Demonstrate coordinated range of motion of all four extremities without assistive devices.

RETENTION AND PROMOTION

In order to continue in the Nursing Program a student must:

  1. Receive a final grade of "C" or above in each nursing course
  2. Receive a final grade of "C" or above in the following courses taken within the last 7 years:
    Anatomy
    Physiology
    Nutrition
    Microbiology
    2114
    2124
    -
    2155
  3. Maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above in all courses
  4. Continued compliance with ADA admission requirements

Students must achieve a passing grade in both theory and clinical components in each nursing course for successful completion.
