The ceremony is open to Eastern students from all campuses and teaching sites.
In the event of rain, the dinner will be moved inside the E.E. Tourtellotte Student Center. For the line-up at 6:30 p.m., graduates, marshals, faculty, professional staff and platform guests will assemble in the weight room (in the back of the Field House).
5 p.m. - Free dinner for all graduates and parents/family outside E.E. Tourtellotte Student Center
6:30 p.m. - Graduate line-up on the sidewalk between the E.E. Tourtellotte Student Center and the Clock Tower
7 p.m. - Graduation Ceremony for all graduates in the C.C. Dunlap Field House
Gary Wansick of McAlester, OK will be Eastern's 2019 Commencement speaker.
Wansick attended Eastern from 1978-80. He studied psychology and played tennis for the Mountaineers before transferring to the University of Oklahoma. Before he completed his degree, Wansick began working as a police officer for the Moore Police Department and discovered his true calling. He returned to the McAlester Police Department as an officer in 1981 and worked his way through the ranks as a lieutenant in the Criminal Investigation Division and a captain before being named Chief of Police in 2013. During that time, he also returned to Eastern to complete his criminal justice degree in 2000. Wansick has lived in McAlester for 58 years. An active community volunteer, he is a McAlester Lions Club and Masonic member, and currently serves on the board of Caring Hands, a non-profit health facility. He has previously served as a board member for the American Red Cross, Fraternal Order of Police, and the First Methodist Church in McAlester. In 2016, Wansick was invited to the White House to be a part of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing, a task force that was launched to identify the best means to provide effective collaboration between law enforcement and local communities that will reduce crime and increase trust.
