MOUNTAINEER BASEBALL Story by Aric Thomas Mountaineers Open Conference with a Sweep
In game one, two highly touted pitchers matched up. Jeremy McBryde, for Rose and Chance Deason are both under control with the San Diego Padres. Deason out-dueled McBryde and picked up the win. In his best performance of the year, Deason (5-0) tossed a complete game allowing just seven hits, two runs and one walk while striking out 11. Eastern scored first in the 2nd inning. Carey Crain hit a one out double that was followed by a ground out. With Crain standing on 3rd base, Russell Boothe hit his second home run of the season. Rose answered with one in the 3rd inning, but Eastern scored one in the 4th and then four in the 6th inning. Eight of the nine Mountaineer starters had hits and Josh Rorex 2-3, was the only Eastern hitter with two hits. Steve Irvine and Boothe each drove in two runs. In game two, the Mountaineers dug a 3-0 hole before striking for four runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. After singles by Bryce Killingsworth, Steve Irvine and Dearth Parker, Gunner Glad connected on a grand slam. Glad raised his team high home run total to nine and his RBI total to 40. With a 5-5 tie heading into the bottom of the 7th inning, Eastern struck for two more and held on to win 8-5. With two outs and Josh Rorex at 2nd base, Kyle Price tripled to score Rorex. Chad Price then stepped to the plate and drove Kyle Price in with a RBI single. Offensively, Steve Irvine had three hits and Glad, Rorex, Chad Price and Killingsworth had two hits a piece. Carey Crain pitched good enough to win but instead got a no decision. Crain tossed six innings and allowed four runs, only two of which were earned. Levi Rhoades (4-2) came on to pick up the win in relief. He threw 2 2/3 innings and allowed no hits and no runs while striking out four.
