MOUNTAINEER BASEBALL Story by Aric Thomas Eastern Loses Series to NEO
Despite a great pitching effort from Chance Deason and Levi Rhoades, Eastern dropped game one. The two combined to throw seven innings and surrendered no earned runs and six hits while combining for seven strike outs. Rhoades (4-3) took the hard luck loss. Offensively, the Mountaineers could only muster four hits. In game two of the doubleheader, Eastern continued its struggle at the plate. The offense never got going and the Mountaineers only had four hits. Gunner Glad and Carey Crain each had two hits. Crain also hit his 7th home run of the year. In the 3rd game of the series, the Mountaineers finally got it going and won 6-3. Gunner Glad (4-2) threw his first complete game of the year. He allowed just 2 earned runs, one walk and nine hits while striking out six. Offensively, the Mountaineers finally got their bats going in the series. Glad and Chad Price had three hits a piece to lead the 12 hit attack. Dearth Parker and Kyle Price chipped in two hits a piece. Glad hit his team high 10th home run of the season and Kyle Price drove in three runs. In the finale of the four game series, Eastern jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first two innings. Unfortunately, the Mountaineers couldn’t keep the lead and dropped the final game of the series. Offensively, Carey Crain went 3-4 to lead the 14 hit output. Dearth Parker, Gunner Glad and Steve Irvine each chipped in with two hits. Parker, Glad and Crain also scored two runs a piece. Carter Browning (1-3) took the loss in relief.
