SUMMER BASEBALL UPDATE:
Glad and Irvine Named To Summer All Star Teams
Gunner Glad was named to the Northwoods
League North Division All-Star Team. Glad plays for the Alexandria Beetles located
in Alexandria, Minnesota. He was selected as a pitcher for
the team. The Northwoods League is recognized as one of the
premier summer leagues in the country and the All-Star game will
be televised on ESPNU. The game will be broadcast live July
12th on ESPN360.com and will re-air later that night at 12:30 am
on ESPNU. The replay is scheduled to air again on ESPNU on
Friday, July 13th at 8:00 pm central standard time. As of
July 9th, Glad has pitched in 14 games and has compiled a 1-1 record
with one save. He has thrown 25 innings, struck out 14 batters
and held opponents to a .226 batting average. Glad is also
swinging the bat for the Beetles. In 65 at bats, he is currently
batting .277 with five doubles, one home run, eight runs scored,
12 RBI’s and six stolen bases. The Alexandria Beetles
are currently 21-17. They finished in 3rd place for the 1st
half and for the 2nd half they are in 2nd place, one game out of
1st place.
Infielder Steve Irvine was selected
to play in the Florida Collegiate Summer League All-Star game. The game will be held on July
15th. Irvine is playing for the Altamonte Springs Snappers
which is located just outside of Orlando, Florida. As of
July 8th, Irvine has started all 21 games that the Snappers have
played this summer. He is leading the Florida Collegiate
Summer League with 24 runs scored and 22 stolen bases. Irvine
also ranks 5th in the league with 13 walks.
Pitcher
Chance Deason is playing for the Peninsula Oilers in the Alaska
Baseball League. The Oilers are located in Kenai,
Alaska. As of July 9th, Deason has pitched in six games,
five of which he started. He has compiled a 2-1 record and
an earned run average of 2.54. In 21.1 innings pitched, Deason
has struck out 15 batters and held opponents to a .250 batting
average.
Another
pitcher having great success this summer is Ashton Mowdy. He is
playing in the New York Collegiate Baseball League for the Geneva
Red Wings. As of July 9th, Mowdy has appeared in eight
games, two of which he started. He has compiled a 3-0 record
and a 2.08 earned run average. Mowdy has thrown 26 innings,
struck out 31 batters and allowed just 14 hits for an opponent
batting average of .152.
| Carter Browning
and Derek Kiker are both pitching for the
Skagit Eagles in the Pacific International League. Skagit
is located approximately 60 miles north of Seattle, Washington. As
of July 8th, Browning and Kiker have won four of the teams
11 wins this summer. Browning is 2-0 in five appearances,
in which he has started twice. He has compiled a 1.72
earned run average in 15.2 innings. Browning has struck
out 12 while walking just one batter and he has help opponents
to a .207 batting average. Kiker is also 2-0 in eight
appearances, one of which was a start. Kiker has tossed
12.1 innings this summer and struck out 12. |

Three more returning Mountaineer
baseball players that are also playing this summer are Casey Gibson,
Josh Miller, and Bo O’Dell. Gibson is playing for the
Chillicothe Mudcats in the M.I.N.K. (Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and
Kansas) Baseball League. Miller is pitching for the San Diego
Mavericks in the Western Baseball Association. Bo O’Dell
was playing for the Wichita Falls Roughnecks in the Texas Collegiate
League until his summer was cut short due to an injury.
