MOUNTAINEER BASEBALL Story by Aric Thomas Eastern’s Winning Streak Reaches Seven
Pitching set the tone in game one. Chance Deason (2-1) started for the Mountaineers and picked up the win. Deason turned in a dominating performance by striking out 10 Dragon hitters in just four innings of work. Ashton Mowdy tossed the final three innings and picked up his first save of the season. Mowdy allowed just one run and two hits while striking out three. Eastern got on the board first in the 3rd inning. After a Steve Irvine single, stolen base and balk to 3rd base, Gunner Glad drove in the game’s first run with a ground out. In the 4th inning, the Mountaineers added three more runs. Nate Pettus led off with a double and Jeff Scardino bunted him to 3rd base. Blake Mounce followed with a RBI single, and then Brady White added an RBI single and Irvine completed the scoring with a RBI single. The Mountaineers added their final run in the 5th inning with Pettus connecting on his first home run of the year. Irvine finished the game 2-2 with a walk and Pettus was 2-3 with a double and a home run. In game two, Eastern struck quick. In the bottom of the 1st inning, Steve Irvine led off with a double and after Dearth Parker sacrifice bunt advanced Irvine to third base, a throwing error plated Irvine. However, the Mountaineers bats were kept quiet until the 6th inning. Entering the inning down 3-1, Eastern took the lead with three runs. Parker and Gunner Glad led off with back to back singles and then a double steal. With one out, Nate Pettus was intentionally walked. Jeff Scardino made the Dragons pay with a two RBI single, which was followed by a sacrifice fly from Casey McCollum. Paris tied the game in the top of the 7th, but Eastern took the lead for good in the bottom of the 8th inning. Casey Gibson led off with a triple and after back to back walks to Pettus and Scardino, pinch hitter Brady White came through with a sacrifice fly. Josh Miller, Jared Coon and Pettus combined on the mound to allow just four runs to Paris. Pettus (2-0) picked up his second win of the year by tossing the final three frames.
