MOUNTAINEER BASEBALL Story by Aric Thomas Eastern’s Season Comes to an End The 15th ranked Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team (41-18) completed their season in the Bi-State Conference Tournament. The Mountaineers went 2-2 in the tournament. In their opening game, Eastern knocked off Seminole State College 11-10. In game two, the Mountaineers fell in 13 innings 8-6 to Connors State College. Eastern came back to defeat Northeastern A&M College 14-2 in a seven inning run rule. In their final game, Eastern lost a tough 2-1 decision to Connors State College.Eastern’s first game of the tournament was a back and forth affair. The Mountaineers jumped out to a 6-1 lead through 4 ½ innings. Jeff Scardino’s three run homer gave Eastern the 6-1 lead. Seminole answered back with five runs in the 5th and two runs in the 6th inning to grab an 8-6 lead. After trading runs in the 7th inning, Eastern took the lead for good with four runs in the top of the 8th inning. Back to back RBI doubles by Gunner Glad and Casey Gibson made the score 10-8 and a Seminole error plated the Mountaineers 11th run. Scardino pitched the final four frames to pick up the win. Steve Irvine (3-5) and Gunner Glad (3-4) led the offense with three hits a piece. In the Mountaineers second game, they lost a tough 8-6 decision in 13 innings. Trailing 2-0 heading into the 6th inning, Eastern tied the game on a two out, two run home run by Blake Mounce. Nate Pettus doubled in a run with two outs in the 7th inning to give Eastern a 3-2 lead. Connors answered back with a solo home run in the bottom of the 8th inning. Neither team scored until the 13th inning. After Dearth Parker doubled, Gunner Glad followed with a single. Casey Gibson then hit into a fielders choice and Pettus followed with a home run. Eastern took a 6-3 lead into the bottom of the 13th inning. Connors scored five runs, the last four on a grand slam home run to win 8-6. Ashton Mowdy turned in another great pitching performance. He threw seven innings and allowed just three runs on six hits while striking out six. Glad threw 5 2/3 innings of relief and took the tough loss on the mound. Offensively, Pettus finished with three hits and three RBI’s. Parker (3-5) and Casey McCollum (3-7) added three hits a piece for the Mountaineers. In their first elimination game, the Mountaineers came out swinging. After scoring one run in the 1st inning, Eastern touched NEO pitching with eight runs in the second inning and never looked back. In the inning, Jeff Scardino and Blake Mounce each hit their second home runs of the tournament. Casey Gibson drove in two with a single and Casey McCollum drove in two with a double. The Mountaineers added single runs in the 3rd, 5th and 6th innings. In the 7th inning, Eastern plated their final two runs. NEO scored singles run in the 5th and 7th innings and the final score was 14-2. Nate Pettus picked up the win on the mound. Pettus threw 6 2/3 innings and allowed just two runs on seven hits while striking out nine. Phil Parcell came on to record the final out. Offensively, Steve Irvine and Pettus each had three hits. Irvine also scored three runs. In the Mountaineers final game, they lost a tough 2-1 decision to Connors. Eastern scored one run in the first inning, but failed to plate another run the rest of the game. Mountaineer pitching held Connors scoreless until the bottom of the 7th inning. A bases loaded walk plated Connors first run and then in the bottom of the 8th inning a two out single plated the final run. Jimmy Johnson was impressive on the mound. The freshman from Wilburton pitched 6 1/3 innings and allowed just one unearned run on six hits while striking out five. Jeff Scardino took the hard luck loss for Eastern.
