Mountaineers Go 1-2 against Cowley
Story by Staff – 03/02/09

The Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team (5-11-1) won Saturday’s opener to a three game series with Cowley College 19-5.  Unfortunately, they couldn’t save some of those runs for Sunday.  The Mountaineers dropped both games Sunday by scores of 4-3 and 6-3.  The first game went extra innings.

On Saturday, Eastern really got the offense going by scoring a season high 19 runs and pounding out 18 hits.  Eight Mountaineer starters had hits.  Stephen Hagen was 3-6 with a double and a pair of home runs.  He also scored three times and drove in six runs.  Phil Parcell picked up the win on the mound.  He allowed just one hit through five innings.  He didn’t walk anyone and struck out four.  Andrew Watson came on to throw the final three innings.  Watson didn’t surrender a run and allowed just one hit.

In the first game Sunday, Eastern was trailing 2-0 in the 4th when Jesse Santo cut the lead in half with a home run.  Cowley scored another run in the 5th, but the Mountaineers tied it in the bottom of that frame.  Cameron Green’s RBI single scored Brady White and Tommie Johnson scored later on a passed ball.  The two teams remained tied until the 8th inning.  Cowley scored the game winning run on a RBI double by Colt Loehrs.  Jimmy Johnson started on the mound for Eastern and went five innings.  He allowed 3 runs on 4 hits while striking out four.  Jeff Scardino took the loss on the mound pitching the final three innings.  Scardino gave up just the one run on two hits and he also struck out four.  Offensively, Brady White was the only Eastern batter with two hits.  White went 2-3 with a run scored.

In game two Sunday, Eastern got behind 5-0 in the 2nd inning and could never get the offense going to get back in the game.  On the mound, John Frisby, Tyler Vann, Buddy Burke and Caleb Walker pitched the final 5 1/3 innings.  They combined to allow just one run on three hits.  Offensively, Houston Slemp was 2-3 with a stolen base and 3 runs batted in.
