Mountaineers Split Two Extra Inning Games with Paris
Story by Staff – 03/05/09

The Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team (6-12-1) won the first game 4-3 in extra innings against Paris Junior College.  In game two, the Mountaineers lost 11-9 in extra innings.

Paris carried a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 3rd inning.  Jesse Santo led off the 3rd inning with a single for Eastern.  After a fielder’s choice, Stephen Hagen doubled to put runners at 2nd and 3rd base.  With two outs, Casey McCollum hit a RBI single and then Brady White followed with a triple that drove in two.  The teams remained tied until the bottom of the 8th inning.  Jeff Scardino slapped a single to right field that scored Tommie Johnson with the winning run.  Scardino also picked up the win on the mound by pitching three scoreless innings.  He allowed just two hits while striking out four.  With the bat, Scardino was 2-5 with a run scored and the game winning RBI.  Johnson was 3-3 with a double, walk and run.

The second game became a slug fest early.  Paris plated four runs in each of the first two innings.  Eastern answered back with a run in the first and five in the 2nd inning.  Stephen Hagen’s three run home run, his sixth of the year, capped the scoring for the Mountaineers in the second.  Eastern closed the gap to 8-7 in the bottom of the 4th inning.  Paris added a run in the 5th inning.  Trailing 9-7 in the bottom of the last inning, Brady White belted a two run home run over the right field fence to tie the game.  Neither team scored in the 8th inning and Paris went on to score two runs on four singles in the 9th inning.  Jesse Santo reached base with a single to lead off the bottom of the 9th and put the tying run at the plate, but the Mountaineers couldn’t close the gap.  Tommie Johnson added another three hits by going 3-5, scoring two times and driving in one.  Santo went 3-4 with a walk, run scored and two RBI’s.  On the mound, Caleb Walker, Andrew Watson and John Frisby combined to throw six innings of relief.  They allowed just one run on four hits.  They also struck out four batters.

Eastern will take the field again this weekend against Panola College.  The two teams will meet in Marshall, TX on Saturday night.  The 9-inning game will begin at 7:00 pm and it will be played at East Texas Baptist University.  On Sunday, the two teams will play a double header beginning at 1:00 pm.  The double header will be played at Panola College in Carthage, TX.
