MOUNTAINEER BASEBALLEastern Defeats Grayson in Season
Opener The Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team (1-0) opened the 2010 season with a 7-4 win at Grayson County College on Tuesday. The Mountaineers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the 1st inning and then never looked back. Chris Munoz led off the game with a walk and Cameron Green followed with a hit by pitch. After two strike outs, Kyle Wallace drew a two out walk to load the bases. Freshman catcher Sam King delivered the first Mountaineer hit of the year with a single to right field that scored two runs. Eastern held Grayson scoreless in the bottom of the 1st inning and then scored two more runs in the top of the 2nd inning. Keith Price singled and stole second base and the Mountaineers followed that with three more walks and a hit batter to push the lead to 4-0. After another scoreless inning for Grayson, Eastern extended the lead to 6-0 in the 3rd inning. Ben Kozma led off with a single and Joe Spring’s sacrifice bunt moved Kozma to second base. Price was then hit by a pitch and Munoz followed with a RBI single. Green scored Price with a ground out. Grayson cut the lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the 4th inning, but John Frisby, Andrew Watson and Joe Spring threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. They allowed just three hits, no walks and struck out five. The Mountaineers added an insurance run in the top of the 8th inning. Slemp walked and then stole both second and third bases. Wallace singled to bring Slemp home. Tyler Sparks (1-0) picked up the win as the pitcher. Sam King and Ben Kozma had two hits each. The Mountaineers are scheduled to play their home opening games Friday against Paris Junior College. The double header will begin at noon, weather permitting.
