MOUNTAINEER BASEBALLEastern Sweeps Paris and Improves
to 3-0 The Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team improved to 3-0 with a sweep of Paris Junior College on Saturday. The Mountaineers won the first game 9-4 and then completed the sweep with a 4-2 victory. Just like their opener, the Mountaineers jumped out to a quick lead in the 1st inning in route to a 9-4 win. The first three batters of the game reached base by a walk, sacrifice bunt (fielder’s choice) and single. With one out, Kyle Wallace blasted a double off the center field fence to score two runs. After another walk, Ben Kozma doubled in a run and then Joe Spring’s squeeze bunt put Eastern up 6-0. Jesse Baird (1-0) held Paris scoreless in his two innings of work on the mound. Baird didn’t allow a hit or run and struck out three batters. The Mountaineers added a run in the 6th inning and two more in the 7th inning. Keith Price’s RBI ground out scored Kozma in the 6th. Houston Slemp doubled, stole third base and scored on an error and Wallace’s sacrifice fly scored Justin Klusak in the 7th. Andrew Watson picked up his first save of the year. Watson entered in the 6th inning with a 7-4 lead and he threw two scoreless innings and struck out four batters. In the second game, Eastern scored in the 1st inning for the third straight time. The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead on a fielder’s choice by Justin Klusak that scored Cameron Green. Tyler Vann allowed two runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, but then settled down to hold Paris scoreless in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Tyler Sparks who improved to 2-0, Jordan Mings and Chris Munoz combined to hold Paris scoreless the rest of the game. The three pitchers combined to throw 4 innings and they allowed 0 runs, 1 hit while striking out four. Munoz picked up his first save of the year. Eastern tied the game 2-2 in the 2nd inning when Curtis Coyle doubled in Levi Presley, who reached base on an error. Sam King’s two out single in the top of the 5th inning scored Coyle and Green to put the Mountaineers ahead 4-2. GAME #1 WP – Baird (1-0) GAME #2 WP – Sparks (2-0)
