MOUNTAINEER BASEBALLPitching Helps Eastern Sweep Texarkana
in Home Opener The Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team (5-2), ranked 50th by Perfect Game, swept their home opening doubleheader against Texarkana College. Eastern won the first game by a score of 4-0 and the second game 4-1. Texarkana is currently ranked 33rd by Perfect Game. Tyler Vann (1-0) started the first game for the Mountaineers and set the theme for the entire day on the pitching mound. Vann picked up his first victory of the year by throwing 5 1/3 scoreless innings. He gave up just one hit while striking out two. Andrew Watson pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to complete the shutout. Watson allowed a hit and struck out one. Offensively, the Mountaineers scored a run in the 4th inning and three in the 5th inning. Second baseman Jordan Mings connected on his first home run of the year, a solo shot, in the 4th inning. After Chris Munoz scored on an error, centerfielder Houston Slemp hit a two run home run in the 5th inning that put Eastern up 4-0. Slemp was 3-3 with a run and 2 RBI’s and Cameron Green was 2-2 with a run and a sacrifice hit. Nate Coronado (1-0) earned his first victory of the year in game two. Coronado allowed a single run in the 1st inning but held Texarkana scoreless in his next two innings of work. The Mountaineer bullpen then proceeded to hold Texarkana scoreless for the rest of the game. Joe Spring threw 3 1/3 innings, John Frisby 2/3 of an inning and Chris Munoz pitched the final two innings. Munoz earned his second save of the year while striking out two and not allowing a base runner. Ben Kozma and Jordan Mings hit back to back doubles in the 2nd inning to tie the game 1-1. Sam King singled in Cameron Green to put the Mountaineers up 2-1 in the 3rd inning. Levi Presley’s bases loaded ground out gave Eastern a 3-1 lead in the 5th inning. In the 7th inning, Chris Munoz connected on his first home run of the year to extend the lead to 4-1. The Mountaineers were scheduled to host Coffeyville Community College (KS) on Sunday. Weather has moved the doubleheader to Wednesday (2/24). The first game will start at noon. GAME #1 GAME #2
