Despite Five Home Runs, Mountaineers Only Split with Paris

SlempThe 23rd ranked Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team split a doubleheader with Paris Junior College on Wednesday.  Paris won the first game 10-7 and the Mountaineers took the second game 12-3.

In game one, Eastern fell behind 1-0 in the top of the 1st inning.  In the bottom of the 1st however, they took a 2-1 lead.  Chris Munoz led off the game by being hit by a pitch.  Cameron Green doubled in Munoz and then Houston Slemp doubled in Green.  Paris took a 5-2 lead in the 4th inning with two home runs and a sacrifice fly.  With another run in the top of the 5th inning, Paris extended its lead to 6-2.  The Mountaineers tied the game in the bottom of the 5th.  Joe Spring singled with one out.  With two outs, Munoz added a single, Green doubled Spring home and then Slemp hit his fourth home run of the year.  Tied 6-6, Paris scored another four runs in the top of the 6th inning.  Eastern could only manage a single run in the bottom of the 7th inning to cut the score to 10-7.  Slemp continued his big game with a triple that scored Green.

Eastern was able to keep the offense going in the second game.  The Mountaineers scored three runs in the 1st inning, four in the 2nd, two in the 3rd and three more in the 4th.  Chris Munoz was 3-4 with two doubles and a home run.  Sam King and Jordan Mings each went 2-3 with a home run.  Joe Spring was 2-4 with a double and Houston Slemp hit his team leading fifth home run of the season.  Brandon Marris (2-0) picked up the win for Eastern.  He pitched four innings and allowed just a single run on three hits, no walks and he struck our four batters.  John Frisby came on to pitch the final three innings.  Frisby allowed two runs on two hits and he struck out two.

The Mountaineers will take the field again on Saturday.  They will travel to Carthage, TX and play a three game series with Panola College.  The game schedule has changed from what was originally posted on the web site.  The two teams will play a single game on Saturday beginning at 6:00 pm.  Then on Sunday the two teams will play a 1:00 pm doubleheader.  The Mountaineers then travel home to play Butler Community College on Monday and Jefferson College on Tuesday.
