Eastern Wins 5th in a Row with Defeat of Carl Albert

The Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team (16-13) defeated Carl Albert State College on Thursday.  The Mountaineers doubled up the Vikings by a score of 8-4.

The Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning when Houston Slemp scored on a single by Sam King.  Carl Albert tied the game in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  Eastern answered right back with two runs in the top of the 3rd and 4th innings.  In the 3rd, King led off with a double.  Jordan Mings sacrifice bunt advanced courtesy runner Curtis Coyle.  Justin Klusak walked and then Nathan Goodall hit a double that scored both runners.  In the 4th inning with one out, Cameron Green walked and Houston Slemp singled.  Green scored on an errant throw by the catcher after a double steal.  King walked and then Mings drove in Slemp with a double.  Leading 5-1, Eastern expanded their lead with another run in the top of the 6th inning.  Green singled, King singled and then Mings singled Green home.  Carl Albert scored two runs in the bottom of the 6th to cut the lead to 6-3.  The Mountaineers answered back again with single runs in the top of the 7th and 8th innings.  Steve Genao reached base on an error and then advanced to third base on a wild pitch.  Ben Kozma then hit a RBI single.  In the 8th inning, King was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  With one out Klusak and Goodall drew back to back walks.  Genao drove in the Mountaineers eighth run with a single.  Carl Albert cut the lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the 8th, but neither team would score in the 9th inning.  Jesse Baird picked up his fourth win of the year.  Baird pitched five innings and allowed an unearned run on no hits and five strikeouts.  Tyler Sparks pitched the 6th, 7th and 8th innings.  Sparks allowed three runs, but allowed just two hits while striking out four.  Chris Munoz struck out two batters in pitching a scoreless 9th inning.  Offensively, Sam King led the way.  King was 3-4 with a double, walk and a hit by pitch.  Jordan Mings was 2-3 with a double, two RBI’s, walk, sacrifice bunt and a stolen base.

The Mountaineers will take the field again next Thursday when they begin Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference games.  On Thursday, they will host Arkansas Baptist College in a double header beginning at 1:00 pm.  Saturday, Eastern will travel to Little Rock and play Arkansas Baptist College at 1:00 pm.
