Eastern Wins Nine in a Row – Opens Conference 4-0
Story by staff (04/11/10)

On Saturday, the Eastern Oklahoma State College baseball team (20-13 / 4-0) swept Arkansas Baptist College by scores of 8-7 and 9-3.  With the sweep, the Mountaineers opened Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference play in 1st place with a 4-0 record.

In the first game, the two teams scored two runs a piece in the 1st inning.  Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning, Chris Munoz was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  After stealing second base, Cameron Green sacrifice bunt moved Munoz to third base.  Houston Slemp walked and then stole second.  Sam King’s single scored Munoz and then Jordan Mings sacrifice bunt scored Slemp.  Eastern took the lead in the 2nd inning.  Keith Price led off with a double and advanced to third base on a Joe Spring sacrifice bunt.  He later scored when Ben Kozma got caught in a run down between first and second base.  The Mountaineers scored single runs in the 5th and 6th innings to take a 5-2 lead.  In the 5th inning, Green doubled with two outs and then Slemp singled him home.  In the 6th, Justin Klusak singled and Price’s second double of the game scored Klusak.  Arkansas Baptist rallied to take a 7-5 lead in the top of the 7th inning.  Despite getting only one hit, they scored five runs.  In the game, all seven of their runs reached base by either walk, hit by pitch or an error.  Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Green led off with a walk and then Slemp doubled him home.  After a pop out, Jordan Mings hit a ground ball to the second baseman who over threw the first baseman allowing Slemp to score.  Mings then pitched a scoreless 8th inning to pick up the win, because the Mountaineers won the game in the bottom of the 8th.  Munoz led off with a double and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Green.  Slemp scored Munoz with a base hit to left field.  Trent Scrivner pitched six strong innings for Eastern.  He allowed two runs and two hits in the 1st inning.  After that, he didn’t allow another hit or run and he struck out six.

In game two both teams scored in each of the first three innings.  Arkansas Baptist scored single runs in each of the first three innings and Eastern scored two runs in the first and third innings and a single run in the second.  In the 1st inning, Houston Slemp hit his 8th home run of the season.  It was a two run shot that also scored Chris Munoz who doubled to lead off the game.  In the 2nd inning, Levi Presley singled and later scored on a bases loaded walk to Slemp.  Jordan Mings led off the bottom of the 3rd inning with his 8th home run of the season.  Justin Klusak singled and later scored on a balk.  The 5-3 lead after three innings for the Mountaineers was all that they would need but they added four more runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.  Presley walked to lead off the inning and Cameron Green was hit by a pitch with one out. Slemp drove Presley home with a single and then Sam King loaded the bases reaching on an error.  Mings then tripled home three runs.  Slemp and Mings each drove in four runs in the game.  Nate Coronado improved to 3-1 by pitching five innings.  He allowed three runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits while striking out two.  Joe Spring pitched two scoreless innings.  Spring also struck out four batters.

Eastern will take the field again on Monday.  They will host Carl Albert State College in a 2:00 pm game.  On Thursday they will return to Oklahoma Collegiate Athletic Conference play.  The Mountaineers will host Rose State College in a 1:00 pm double header Thursday and travel to Midwest City for a 1:00 pm double header on Saturday.
