Eastern Drops Two Games to NEO
Story by staff (05/09/10)

The Eastern baseball team (32-19) dropped a pair of games to NEO on Saturday.  With the two losses, Eastern finished with a 14-6 Oklahoma Athletic Collegiate Conference regular season record in a tie for 1st place with NEO.  By tiebreaker, NEO will be the #1 seed in next week’s Region 2 Tournament and Eastern will be the #2 seed.

In the first game, Eastern jumped out to a 6-0 lead through five innings.  In the 4th inning, the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead when Chris Munoz scored on a wild pitch.  In the 5th inning, Justin Klusak led off with a home run, his 8th of the year.  Joe Spring and Ben Kozma hit back to back singles and a sacrifice bunt by Munoz advanced both runners.  Cameron Green was hit by a pitch to load the bases and then Houston Slemp doubled to score two runners.  Sam King then singled in two runs to put Eastern up 6-0.  NEO answered in the top of the 5th inning with a seven run inning.  Joseph Paylor’s grand slam was the big hit in the inning.  Eastern retook the lead in the bottom of the 6th inning.  Houston Slemp led off the inning with a single and stole 2nd base.  With one out Jordan Mings singled.  Keith Price reached base on an error and Slemp scored on the play.  With two outs, Spring singled to right center to score Mings.  That put the Mountaineers up 8-7.  However in the final inning, NEO rallied for four runs.  Five singles and one walk led to the four run inning.  Trailing 11-8 in the bottom of the 7th inning, Eastern was able to cut the lead to 11-10, but they left two man stranded when Nathan Goodall’s fly out to center ended the game.

As was the case on Thursday, the first game of the double header saw a lot of runs scored and then the second game was a pitcher’s duel.  Eastern took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning when Houston Slemp’s sacrifice fly scored Chris Munoz.  NEO answered with four runs in the 2nd inning.  The Mountaineers could only push one more runner across home plate the rest of the game.  In the bottom of the 4th inning, Steve Genao’s RBI single scored Cameron Green.  NEO added two insurance runs in the 5th inning and won the game 6-2.  Nate Coronado was the tough luck loser.  Coronado dropped to 4-2 on the year.  He pitched seven innings and allowed six runs; only five were earned, on 11 hits.  He walked three and struck out a season high 10 batters.  Jordan Mings pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Coronado.

Eastern will take the game again on Monday versus Murray State College.  The two teams will be playing a single nine inning game beginning at 3:00 pm.  That will wrap up the regular season for the Mountaineers.

On Thursday, Eastern will play their first game in the Region 2 Tournament against Rose State.  The game will begin at 3:30 pm.  For the full tournament bracket, you can click on the link at the home baseball page.
