Eastern Opens Region 2 Tournament with a 12-1 Victory

The Eastern baseball team (34-19) rolled in their opening game in the Region 2 Tournament on Thursday.  The Mountaineers defeated Rose State College 12-1.

Jesse Baird improved to 8-2 on the season with a dominant performance on the mound.  Baird allowed just one run on three hits.  He also struck out three batters and pitched his second complete game of the year.  Eastern trailed 1-0 when they came to the plate in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  Sam King singled to lead off the inning and then Jordan Mings doubled.  Keith Price’s sacrifice fly tied the game 1-1.  In the bottom of the 4th inning, Houston Slemp tripled to lead off.  King walked and then the next two batters flied out.  Justin Klusak blasted his 9th home run of the year, a three run shot, to put Eastern up 4-1.  The Mountaineers scored another run in the 5th inning.  Slemp singled, stole 2nd base and advanced to 3rd base on a wild pitch.  He later scored on King’s fielder’s choice.  Eastern put the game away with seven runs in the 6th inning.  Ben Kozma doubled to lead off the inning and then Chris Munoz hit his 14th home run of the year.  Cameron Green walked and stole 2nd base.  After two fly outs, Mings and Price walked to load the bases.  Klusak doubled to score two runs and a third run scored on an error by the center fielder.  Joe Spring then walked and Kozma was hit by a pitch.  Munoz singled home two more runs to put the Mountaineers up 12-1.

Eastern will play Connors State College at 3:30 pm on Friday.
