Mountaineer Softball TeamFebruary 18, 2006 Cowtown Classic, Game 1 Bossier Parrish - Diggers, Sustaire (2) and Wright.
Eastern - Karla Pittman and Amy Tice Game 3 The Eastern Lady Mountaineers Softball team extended their winning streak to seven games to start the season at the Cowtown Classic this weekend in Fort Worth, TX. With the weather cold and gray the sun shone brightly on the ladies from Eastern. Jaclyn Mullaney hit her first homerun of the season to break a scoreless tie with Bossier Parrish in the bottom of the fourth to seal a 1-0 win. Karla Pittman picked her third win of the season, scattering three hits in five innings to keep her ERA at 0.000 and remain tied at the top spot in the national rankings. Marge Johnson earned the win in the second game against Ranger, TX 12-1, throwing her third no-hitter in the three inning run-rule. Johnson did not allow an earned run and her ERA remains at 0.000 also, tying her with Pittman for the first spot in the latest NJCAA national statistics. Lesley Boyd went 2 for 2, with 2 homeruns and 3 RBI's in the Ranger game. Johnson added her second homerun of the year. Ashley Graham, Rhonda McClung and Caitlyn Crotty went 2 for 2 and Brittney Day went 2 for 4, and Lindsay Hopper added a 1 for 1 performance from the plate as Eastern collected 14 hits against Ranger in three innings. Pittman returned to the circle in the third game against Cowley Co, KS. Cowley came into the game ranked #2 in the country in Division II. Cowley proved to be no match for Pittman, gathering only two hits in three innings. The offense came alive against Cowley pitching and rivaled Eastern's pitching performances. The Lady Mountaineers run ruled Cowley 10-0 with one out in three innings on six hits, five of which were homeruns. Day led off with a walk and Ashley Graham singled before Johnson hit her third homer of the season to stake Eastern to a 3-0 lead in the first. Amy Tice's solo shot in the second put Eastern up 4-0 after two innings. The crushing blows came in the bottom of the third. Laney Anderson led off with a solo shot to right. Boyd drew a walk, Graham popped out to short, Johnson reached on an error and Rhonda McClung delivered a three run shot to right center. Amy Tice was hit by a pitch and plated as Mullaney hit her second homerun of the day to complete the 10-0 run rule. Eastern softball is drawing considerable attention from four-year schools due to the NJCAA national stats. Two pitchers are tied atop the national stats in ERA at 0.00, Johnson first in strikeouts, Pittman fifth. Four batters in the top 34 in hitting: Anderson 12th, Graham and Tice tied for 25th and Johnson coming in at 34th. Tice is 50th in RBI's, Johnson 8th in homeruns and the team ranks 8th in batting average. All this came before Friday's onslaught, both offensively and defensively. Eastern is 7-0 for the first time in school history, given up only two runs in seven games, both unearned and hit 10 homeruns. Eastern has two homes games in February, Crowder, MO comes to Wilburton on Sunday at 1:00 and Texarkana enters on Tuesday, 28th at 1:00, before hosting their own tournament March 3-4 in McAlester. Eastern received votes in the NJCAA pre-season poll but were unranked. The #2 team, Chattanooga State, and #14, Seminole State, will be coming to Eastern's tournament.
