The Eastern Lady Mountaineers traveled to Gainesville, TX on Sunday afternoon to play North Central Texas in a softball doubleheader.

Eastern swept the twin bill 4-0 in the first game and 2-1 in 8 innings in the nightcap. North Central came into the game with 5 wins and 1 loss after finishing last season 55-14.

Marjorie Johnson threw a no hitter and struckout 14 in the first game. Eastern had 9 hits, led by Laney Anderson who went 3 for 3 with 2 singles and a double. Ashley Graham went 2 for 4 with a single and a triple and Lesley Boyd, also 2 for 4, with two singles. Johnson and Jaclyn Mullaney added one single a piece to round out the hitting.

Excitement was the name of the game in the second game as neither team scored until North Central scratched out a run in the bottom of the sixth. Eastern answered in the top of the seventh with Amanda Mosley, pinch running for Jaclyn Mullaney, scoring on a two out single by Brittney Day. Karla Pittman, who pitched the entire game, held North Central in the bottom half of the inning after surrendering a double with one out. Brittney Day fielded a ground ball and threw to Johnson at first for the second out who then completed the inning ending doubleplay by firing to Mullaney at third to tag the lead runner.

Johnson then led off the top of the eighth with a triple and scored on a shot by Amy Tice that the centerfielder miss played in the wind. Pittman retired the side in order to seal the win. Pittman struckout 7 batters, walking two while only giving up two hits to pick up her first win of the season.

Graham led the offense in the second game, once again going 2 for 4 with a single and a double, Day, Tice and Mullaney each added a single with Johnson’s triple to account for Eastern’s hits.

Eastern moves to 2-0 on the season and next plays at Texarkana on Tuesday before traveling to Fort Worth for the Broderick Cowtown Classic next Friday and Saturday. Eastern plays Bossier Parrish, LA at 8:00 a.m., Ranger, TX at 2:00 p.m. and Cowley County, KS at 6:00 p.m. before bracket play on Saturday.
