DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA)
 In 1954, Don McClanen sent 19 letters to
various well-known athletes across America to share an idea of bringing
athletes and coaches together in the service of Jesus Christ. The organization would later be
known as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). This organization
has grown to over 800 employees nationwide and operates on a multimillion
dollar budget. When Mr. McClanen took this first action towards the creation
of FCA, he was employed as the head basketball coach and athletic director
at Eastern Oklahoma State College. Over the years, there have been
attempts by Eastern to memorialize Mr. McClanen and FCA on the campus
with no success. We now believe we have the right leadership and
desire in place to finally make this happen.
Eastern is beginning a fundraising campaign
to honor the man that began FCA. The college has decided to have a bronze bust created of
Mr. McClanen and displayed in the new Student Life and Learning Center
upon the completion of this facility. It is our hope that our Alumni,
faculty, staff and the community will participate in some manner with
this project whether it is through a donation to the project, correspondence
through us to Mr. McClanen, and/or your attendance at the unveiling of
the bust next year (TBA later). We have set the project cost at
$20,000 with commitments to donations already being received. At
the point we collect $10,000, we will instruct the sculptor to begin
the project. The process of development and completion of the bust
will take between six to eight months.
We are very excited about honoring Mr.
McClanen in this manner and how it may inspire young people who attend
our college. In addition,
Eastern will be celebrating its centennial in 2008 and have proclaimed
this event as one of our centennial projects.
