Former Eastern Oklahoma State College President Dr. James M. Miller Inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame

Former Eastern Oklahoma State College Dr. MillerPresident Dr. James M. Miller was among 11 individuals who will be inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame Oct. 8 at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Richard Mosier, president of the Friends of the Oklahoma Museum of Higher Education which sponsors the event, said that “this year’s class of inductees represents a diversity of interests. Their accomplishments attest to their commitment to Oklahoma higher education.”

Miller served as the 14th president of Eastern from 1970 until 1986 when Dr. Bill H. Hill became Eastern’s president.

Under Miller’s leadership Eastern more than doubled its enrollment and added 14 new academic programs and three buildings to the Wilburton campus. Miller had been an administrator at Oklahoma State University for 22 years before coming to Eastern. He served 41 years in higher education.

He also served as an officer in the 45th Infantry Division of the Oklahoma National Guard and retired as a colonel after 36 years of military service. Miller and his wife Nancy now live in McAlester.

Other inductees will include: the late Francis Dinsmore Davis, University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma; LeRoy H. Fischer, Oklahoma State University; Ben Graf Henneke, University of Tulsa; Kathryn Kerr Kunc, University of Central Oklahoma; L. Lowell Lehman, Northeastern State University; and the late Edmon Low, Oklahoma State University.

Also being inducted are: Michael A. Mares, University of Oklahoma; Terence John Mills III, Oklahoma State University; Melvin Todd, Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and Esther A. Winterfeldt, Oklahoma State University.
