MORGAN CONDUCTS WORKSHOP AT FBLA–PBL NATIONAL FALL LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Eastern Oklahoma State College Instructor and PBL Co-advisor Linda Morgan presented a workshop during the 2003 National Fall Leadership Conference—PBL Program, “Lead, Achieve, Succeed. . . With Colors!”

Morgan delighted a room-filled crowd as she presented “Avoid Being a Tumbleweed—Time/Stress Management.” The workshop was part of an exclusive program for PBL members at the conference.

Workshop participants reviewed the Holmes-Rahe Scale of Life Events that Create Stress—negative and positive—and determined their current stress rating. A score over 300 puts you at risk for developing stress-related problems.

The types of stress—distress, eustress, and astress—were discussed and the effects each of these has on one’s body. Major causes of stress among college students, body responses to stress, and coping mechanisms were given.

Time management is a major cause of stress-related problems. Morgan explained that building a schedule, setting priorities, taking responsibility for how you spend your time, and being flexible are important to controlling one’s time.

Morgan attended the two-day conference in Atlanta, Georgia, with over 2,300 FBLA-PBL members and advisors from across the nation. Attendees enjoyed keynote presentations by Bill Cordes and Harriet Turk.

Cordes is a speaker, consultant, and author. He has keynoted for conferences, conventions, schools and universities nationwide. His programs have been featured in 44 states. He has co-authored numerous books for teens including Teen Power Too, Teen Empower, Teen Power Through Christ, Lead Now or Step Aside, and Teen Power and Beyond. Attendees learned, laughed, and gained the insights of the super-successful as he explained the competitive strategies needed to gain the edge in the business world.

Turk’s humorous, thought-provoking message showed students and adults that they could achieve dreams. By reinforcing the concept that we call possess personal power, participants learned that they take charge of their choices. Believing in yourselves, developing your character, and making positive choices reaffirms that we DO have power.

Morgan has been an instructor in the Administrative Office Technology program at Eastern for 17 years. She has been co–advisor for Eastern’s PBL chapter for 16 years. She is also serving as the Oklahoma PBL State Advisor.
