Lifeguard Training Classes

Certified Lifeguard Lindsey ManryIf you are at least 15 years old and may be looking for a summer job as a lifeguard, it’s not too soon to be thinking about certification. The classes can also be taken for college credit.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Training will be offered this spring beginning February 28 through March 5 with a second course slated for April 3-9 at the Eastern Oklahoma State College indoor pool on the Wilburton campus.

Classes will be held from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Water Safety Instruction (WSI) designed to train students to be swimming instructors will be offered from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. weekdays and 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 24- May 1. Students need to contact Instructor Loma Messex before enrolling in WSI. Students must be at least 15 years old by the beginning of the course to take Lifeguard Training and at least 17 to take WSI.

High school juniors with a grade point average of Certified Lifeguard Lindsey Manry3.5 or an ACT score of 21 and seniors with a grade point of 3.0 or better or an ACT score of 19 are eligible to enroll for college credit.

“There is a great demand for Water Safety Instructors during the summer in southeastern Oklahoma,” Messex said. “Its very rewarding to teach young children how to swim and provide that extra measure of recreational water and boating safety.”
