The 2002 Eastern Phi Beta Lambda Chapter Businessperson of the Year is Lowell E. “Buddy” Sandefur. Buddy is a 1978 graduate of Haileyville High School. He has an Associate of Arts in Interpreting/Translating from the Community College of the Air Force and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Liberal Studies from the University of the State of New York.

A 20 year veteran of the U. S. Air Force, he served as a Spanish linguist and held several supervisory and management positions. In his last position before retiring from the Air Force, he managed the day to day operations of a 450 person Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Polish and Czech language school. Under his supervision the school lowered its attrition rate and reorganized the support staff to focus on student academic issues, resulting in a renewed emphasis on teamwork and enhanced student services.

Sandefur is currently employed as the Spanish Instructor for Eastern Oklahoma State College. He is an avid supporter of the Eastern PBL Chapter and is a member of the Professional Division of FBLA PBL. He and his wife, the former Melinda Sherrill, reside in Haileyville and have three children, Candace, Daniel, and Leslie.
