Sullivan
Memorial Scholarship The editors of Easterns newspaper and yearbook received the annual Jim Sullivan Memorial Scholarship awarded by Lions Club International, District 3-K, and the Wilburton Lions Club during the Wilburton Lions Club noon meeting Tuesday, March 4. Eastern students Alicia Agent, a Journalism major from Stigler, and Cassie Wagley, an Agriculture Economics major from Panama, each received a $250 scholarship in recognition of their status as outstanding students at the Wilburton college. Criteria for selection includes overall grade point average involvement in journalism at Eastern and extra curricular activities. The annual scholarship honors the late Jim Sullivan who served as Lions International Director, District 3-K Governor, President and long-time member of the Wilburton Lions Club. Sullivan also served as director of public information at Eastern as well as chairman of the Language and Communications Division and Journalism Department Chairman. Scholarship funds available to the students are directly related to the amount of annual interest accumulated on trust funds established by the District 3-K Lions some time ago, Wilburton Lion and trust member Hank Mooney said. We earn interest each year on an endowed principal held in trust, Mooney said. We are looking strongly into raising additional funds to add to the trust to enable additional scholarships for college students. These students are exceptional young people and we are excited about being able to help them with their education. Wagley was active in high school and serves as editor of the Eastern Mountaineer Yearbook, in the Aggie Club, the Photo Club, listed on the Deans Honor Roll and Whos Who Among American Junior Colleges. Agent is Editor of The Eastern Statesman, the student newspaper, vice president of the Press Club, a member of the Deans Honor Roll, member of the Eastern Presidential Scholars Council and received many awards for journalism through the Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association.
