Join To Fight Against Cancer
(Press Release 4-26-04) Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information More than 100 Eastern students will join with Wilburton groups in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life this weekend at the Wilburton High School track to raise money to combat cancer. RE-SCHEDULED FOR MAY 21, 2004. According to the society the “power of the Relay allows a community to grieve for those lost to cancer and to celebrate those who have survived.” More than 115 students representing 10 campus organizations will join with the community in activities that begin 7 p.m. Friday (April 30) and end 7 a.m. Saturday. Clubs representing Eastern include Phi Theta Kappa (honor society) with 15 participants; Aggie Club, 10; Cheer & Pom Squad, 15; Criminal Justice Club, 12; Phi Beta Lambda (business club) Blue team, 11, and Red team, 12; Character Club, 9; NASA Club, 8; NAACP, 10 and Nursing Club 12. Relay for life is an annual fundraising effort held in communities across the country to raise money for cancer research. The event will begin with a cancer survivor recognition event. Candle-lighted luminaries are available for $5 each provides a method to honor a cancer survivor or remember someone who lost a fight with the disease. All proceeds from luminary sales are donated to the local Relay for Life efforts. Last year Wilburton raised more than $24,000 for the cancer fight. This year supporters say they will raise even more money to fight cancer.
