(Press Release 4-2-04)
Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information

Led by pitching phenomenon Sarah Seagraves, the Lady Mountaineer Softball squad has moved from a 13th pre-season national ranking to the 6th spot this week (3-31-04 poll).

Sarah Seagraves PitchingThe team from the Wilburton college has been playing strongly lately after a slow 4-6 start in February. They have won 31 out of their last 33 games and now face the last part of their season with a 35-8 overall record. They lead their conference by a comfortable margin with an 11-1 record in Region II play.

Veteran Coach Andy Mace feels real good about his team’s chances to make it to the national tournament as they stride into the end of the season and head for playoff tournament action in Oklahoma City in early May.

“This is the best team I’ve ever coached in any sport in my 38 years of coaching,” Mace said.

Sarah SeagravesSeagraves, a sophomore from Edmond, is also leading the nation in two pitching categories according to Mace.

“She has more than 200 strikeouts so far this season to lead the nation,” he added. “Her average of 2.1 strikouts per inning tops the national rankings in that category as well.”Racheal Christian

Mace also relies on good team chemistry and some great hitting from his squad with 10 different team members having home runs this season.
Broken Arrow freshman Racheal Christian is also high in the national rankings in hitting with a .454 batting average.
