Publications Earn High Rankings
(Press Release 4-25-05) Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information By Heather Bambeck, Eastern Journalism Student The Statesman newspaper and Mountaineer yearbook staffs at Eastern Oklahoma State College recently earned high rankings at Journalism competitions sponsored by Northeastern State University and Oklahoma State University. “Both staffs did well at the contests,” Erik Harris, editor of the Eastern Statesman, said. “I don’t think any of the awards would have been possible without the dedicated staff that each publication has working on it. The NSU Media Day competition in Tahlequah saw the Wilburton college pitted against other Oklahoma two-year schools as well as a couple of four-year universities. Both the Statesman and the Mountaineer placed first in overall competition at NSU. They also swept most of the category awards there according to yearbook advisor, Steven Akins. “I was proud to see these students making so many trips to the podium to pick up much-deserved awards,” he said. The two publications garnered 12 first place, one second place and four third place category awards during NSU competition. The Oklahoma Collegiate Press Association(OCPA) contest at OSU in Stillwater featured a larger competition with many judging categories open to not only two-year colleges but also four-year public and four-year private universities. The Statesman was awarded an Honorable Mention in Overall competition at OCPA while the Mountaineer captured an Award of Merit.
