Cyndi Deela, Wilburton; Christie Paxton, Wilburton and Ms. Marilynn Duncan, EOSC Instructor, visit with Phi Beta Lambda member Lindy Morgan at the club’s information booth in Mitchell Hall on Wednesday, February 2. Eastern’s PBL presented the information as part of its community service project supporting the American Cancer Society.

The display included pictures of various cancers users of tobacco may encounter. Pamphlets distributed included When Smokers Quit; The Smoke Around You—Secondhand Smoke in the Workplace, Public Places and Home; Cold Hard Facts About Dip; and Smokeless Tobacco—A Medical Perspective.

PBL members also discussed statistics relating to smoking including Smokers pay twice as much for life insurance; Smoking causes 87% of all lung cancer; If instead of smoking two packs per day for 50 years, you could have had an estimated 1,000,000 if you invested it in a major tobacco company; Tobacco use has been associated with premature aging and skin wrinkling; and each year, 3,000 nonsmoking adults die of lung cancer as a result of breathing secondhand smoke.
