Orientation 2005
(Press Release 7-15-05) Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information While classes at Eastern Oklahoma State College campuses in Wilburton and McAlester don’t officially begin until August 16, incoming freshman will get a taste of education beginning Saturday, August 13, during orientation classes that will begin with Eastern’s dormitories opening at 8 a.m. for resident students to begin the college year. Saturday is designed to orient new students who will be living in one of Eastern’s residence halls and their parents to the campus and aspects of resident college life. Students not living in a residence hall are not required to attend Saturday, however, must attend sessions slated for Sunday according to Dean of Students Preston Boyles. “We have made a number of changes in Freshman Orientation this year,” Boyles said. “They were implemented as a result of students in the past making suggestions to us. “Many students, especially the older students with families who have been out of high school for a few years, aren’t really interested in the material a campus resident wants and needs to know. So, we have separated them and will begin with the resident student this year.” Parents will have an opportunity to receive an orientation to college life and their student’s transition as well. Boyles says the parent’s orientation slated for 2:45 p.m. Saturday in the Student Union Ballroom will include topics like “How can I, as a parent, help my child be successful in college,” campus life, student payment plans and financial aid. Resident orientation registration for parents and students living in dormitories will begin at noon at the front of the Claud C. Dunlap Field House on Saturday. Registration for all students enrolled in OLS 1111 or AG 1011 must register and attend the meeting beginning 9 a.m. Sunday, August 14, in the field house. Boyles says everyone will receive informational packets during orientation explaining the full days of activities that will follow. Regular classes begin Tuesday, August 16, with enrollment continuing until August 29 which is the last day to add classes for the fall semester.
