Congressman Boren
To Speak At Eastern Commencement
(Press Release 5-03-05)
Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information
United States Congressman Dan Boren will address
the 96th Eastern Oklahoma State College spring commencement exercises
6:30 p.m. Friday (May 6) on the front lawn by the clock tower at the
Wilburton campus.
More than 2,500 guests and graduates are expected
to attend the outdoor graduation exercises.
Boren was elected to the Oklahoma House of
Representatives at age 29. He became one of the youngest state legislators
to serve in 2002 and was selected by his Democratic colleagues to be
Caucus Chairman making him the first freshman state lawmaker to ever
receive this honor.
He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives
from Oklahoma’s 2nd Congressional District. Boren obtained a seat
on the House Armed Services Committee as a freshman member of Congress.
He also serves on the House Resources Committee, a panel which provides
Congress with oversight into Indian affairs and public lands.
Boren will address more than 300 Eastern spring
graduates who will be among 29,600 Oklahoma students from 25 state colleges
and universities estimated to earn degrees this year. State graduation
numbers are higher again this year by 1,600, up from 28,000 last year.
Eastern’s spring graduation numbers are down slightly because
a number of students attended December graduation ceremonies where 94
students were granted degrees.
This academic year Eastern will have granted
just over 400 degrees and certificates of completion not counting other
agencies including the Department of Corrections Academy and the Oklahoma
Miner Training Institute also located on the Wilburton campus. Eastern
graduates will range in age from 19 to 57 this year.
State graduation numbers are based on a survey
of Oklahoma higher education institutions. Official data for the 2004-2005
academic year will be available later.
According to Eastern Vice President of Academic
Affairs Dr. Brad Rice, the majority of students earning associate degrees
from Eastern will be in the fields of agriculture, nursing and general
studies which is a slight shift from last year with agriculture, criminal
justice and general studies leading the fields.
Statewide, the most popular fields of study
among the 8,400 students receiving two-year associate degrees are in
nursing, business and general studies. An estimated 15,600 students
will earn bachelor's degrees, 4,400 will earn master's degrees and some
400 students have earned doctoral degrees with another 875 students
earning professional degrees in areas such as law and medicine.
If early estimates hold true, Oklahoma will
have another record number of college graduates ready to enter the workforce
this spring.
Eastern graduates will represent 28 of Oklahoma's
77 counties, 6 different states and one foreign country.
One hundred five Eastern students will receive
the Associate in Arts with 109 earning the Associate in Science, seven
receiving the Associate in Applied Science in Agriculture, nine with
the Associate in Applied Science in Business and 50 graduates will receive
the Associate in Applied Science in Nursing. Five individuals will earn
an Associate in Applied Science Child Development with 13 students earning
One Year Certificates in Child Development and one earning a one-year
certificate in Meat Processing and Food Safety.
