Area Students Named As Eastern Outstanding Graduates

Mandy Skimbo from Wilburton was presented the Outstanding Division Graduate from the Science and Mathematics Division by Chairperson Bill Albright during commencement exercises Friday (May 6) on the Wilburton campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College. One graduate from each of the six divisions of the college is selected each year for the honor. During commencement, five other students were also named as Outstanding Divisional Graduates including: Erik Harris from Hartshorne, as Outstanding Graduate from the Division of Language and Communications; Carolyn Wigington, Wilburton, Nursing; Jerrod Lundry, Haworth, Agriculture; Daniel Vogt, Checota, Social Science and Music and Cliffton Hill, Tushka, Business Division.

Skimbo graduated with Associate degrees in Mathematics and Physical Education and in the top 10 percent of the graduating class. She is a member of Eastern’s national champion cheerleading squad, a member of the Lady Mountaineer’s basketball team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the International Student Organization, a member of Who’s Who among American Junior College Students, Phi Theta Kappa and received the Eastern Citizenship Award last year.

 

She is the daughter of Robert and Susan Skimbo, granddaughter of Sam Taylor and the late Virginia Taylor, Audrey Skimbo and the late Johnny Skimbo. She is a Wilburton High School graduate.

Erik Harris was presented the Outstanding Division Graduate Award from the Division of Language and Education by Chairperson Pat Thomas during commencement exercises Friday (May 6) on the Wilburton campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College. One graduate from each of the six divisions of the college is selected each year for the honor. During commencement, five other students were named as Outstanding Divisional Graduates including: Carolyn Wigington, Wilburton, Nursing; Jerrod Lundry, Haworth, Agriculture; Daniel Vogt, Checota, Social Science and Music; Mandy Skimbo, Wilburton, Science and Mathematics and Cliffton Hill, Tushka, Business Division.

Harris is a journalism major and served as president of the Photography Club, co-founder of the campus student Lions Club, Executive Editor and Managing Editor of the student newspaper, The Statesman, which was named as the best two-year college newspaper in the state for the last two years at Northeastern State University Media Day. He is a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society, the campus Pep Band, yearbook staff.

His awards include designations as the Outstanding Journalism Graduate in Photography and in Newspaper, recipient of the First Amendment Award presented by the Oklahoma Society of Professional Journalists. Additional awards in both photography and writing include first place honors for feature article, sports story, sports photo, news story, critical review and feature column won in competition at NSU Media Day and Oklahoma Interscholastic Press Association competition at Oklahoma State University.

Carolyn Wigington was presented the Outstanding Division Graduate Award from the Division of Nursing by Chairperson Zella Stone during commencement exercises Friday (May 6) on the Wilburton campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College. One graduate from each of the six divisions of the college is selected each year for the honor. During commencement, five other students were named as Outstanding Divisional Graduates including: Erik Harris, Language and Education; Cliffton Hill, Tushka, Business Division; Jerrod Lundry, Haworth, Agriculture; Daniel Vogt, Checota, Liberal Arts; Mandy Skimbo, Wilburton, Science and Mathematics.

Wigington was at the top of her class all four semesters of nursing school and received the Puterbaugh Academic Scholarship during both her freshman and sophomore years. During her time at Eastern she has worked Part-time both at ALCO and McAlester Regional Health Center and cared for her husband and two small sons.
