To Aid Cancer Patients Submitted story Eastern’s PTK Theta Pi Chapter presented a check for $250 to Dana Hugle, second from right, of MRHC as a donation to Tulsa Project Womans Inc. The students organized two dances with the proceeds targeted to this worthy cause according to club sponsor Brenda Kennedy, right. Club officers pictured from left are Linzi Marshall, Vice President of Fellowship from Okmulgee; Heather Hamman, Vice President of Leadership, Clayton and Charlie Bethell, Secretary from Talihina. "The 'Pink Party' dances were a success and Eastern can be proud the student body found this a worthwhile endeavor," Kennedy added. National Breast Cancer Awareness month began in October 1985. Since then, people have organized luncheons, fashion shows, walks and a variety of other activities to help raise money for the fight against this indiscriminating enemy. Southeastern Oklahoma has added a unique event to this list, the Barrel Race Against Breast Cancer. The 2nd Barrel Race Against Breast Cancer was held at the Lightning C Arena on October 22nd. Proceeds from the entry fees were donated to Tulsa Project Woman, Inc., a program that funds mammograms and breast cancer treatments for un-insured women. Event monies raised in McAlester and the surrounding area are returned to provide assistance to patients in Southeastern Oklahoma. Last year Tulsa Project Woman, Inc. provided mammograms and cancer treatment for women in Southeastern Oklahoma. Women from Atoka, Bryan, Choctaw, Coal, Haskell, Latimer, LeFlore, McCurtain, McIntosh, Pittsburg, Pushmataha and Sequoyah counties are Tulsa Project Woman, Inc. patients. In addition to working the dances, PTK members volunteered their time and helped with the Barrel Race which raised approximately $4,000 this year. ![]() |
