Constitution
Day
(Press Release 9-19-05) Submitted Story Eastern will host our first Constitution Day on Monday, September 19, 2005, with Senator Richard Lerblance discussing Freedom of Speech in Mitchell Auditorium at 11:15 a.m. Did you know that: *The U. S. Constitution has 4,440 words and that it is the oldest and shortest written constitution of any government in the world. *Of the typographical errors in the Constitution, the misspelling of the word “Pensylvania” above the signers’ names is probably the most glaring. *Thomas Jefferson did not sign the Constitution. He was in France during the Convention, where he served as the U.S. minister. *Patrick Henry was elected as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, but declined, because he “smelt a rat.” *The first time the formal term “The United States of America” was used was in the Declaration of Independence. (Excerpts from The U. S. Constitution and Fascinating Facts About It) Please join in the celebration of Constitution Day today by integrating the Constitution into class discussions, attending Senator Lerblance’s talk, or checking out the film and display in the library. If you go to the CONSTITUTION DAY WEBSITE and click on “Explore,” you’ll find a great interactive site from The Constitution Museum in Philadelphia. Enjoy the day and the freedoms that our founding fathers made possible in one of the greatest and most influential legal documents ever written. Constitution Day
