College Students Compete With Voter Registration Drive
(Press Release 9-22-05)
Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information

College students across the state will be competing this week to see which campus can register the most voters during the third annual VOICE Voter Registration Contest Sept. 28 and 29.

Eastern Oklahoma State College PTK (Phi Theta Kappa) honor society students will be competing with 19 other Oklahoma colleges and universities to see which college can register the most voters. Last year Eastern students placed third in the state and are hoping to place even higher in competition this year.

Eastern students will be registering voters from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the Student Union lobby on the Wilburton campus. They will also register voters from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the lobby of the Wanda Bass building on the McAlester campus.

The state-wide event is sponsored by Oklahoma Campus Compact VOICE (Vocal Oklahomans in Civic Engagement) initiative as a part of the national Raise Your Voice campaign.

Established in 2000 as part of the Oklahoma Campus Compact, the object is to increase student civic engagement on Oklahoma college campuses.

Langston won the inaugural contest in 2003 with Oklahoma Christian University taking the competition last year.
