Submitted Story

Theatre Eastern, in partnership with the Oklahoma Arts Council, is reviving a popular program with the week-long "Children's Theatre Workshop: SummerArts '06" scheduled for June 19-23 on the Wilburton campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College.

"There are two things really special about this arts camp," according to Ruth Askew Brelsford, theatre director. "We haven't sponsored a summer program for over twenty years, since the highly respected Johnnie Wray led the department, and there has been much public support for reviving the workshop.

Also, we are focusing on high school students, as well as, elementary and middle school students this year."

"When we won the highly accalimed Governor's Arts in Education Award in 2004, I made a commitment to expanding our outreach in this area," Brelsford says.

Students may receive a registration form by calling Ruth at 918-465-1762 or can show up at Mitchell Auditorium on Monday morning, the 19th, at 9 a.m.

Theatre classes will rotate, according to age and experience, in the mornings, 9 a.m. til 12 noon. The morning classes focus on theatre arts and are taught by Dottie

Minshall, voice and movement, Debra Collins Bailey, acting, and Brelsford, creative dramatics and character analysis.

Students will bring a sack lunch and then see professional performances during the noon hour. Students will attend elective classes, of their choice, in the afternoons, 1-3 p.m. Parents will pick their children up at 3 p.m. from the Mitchell parking lot.

"We are very excited about the afternoon classes," Brelsford says. "We are adding painting for the older students. That class will be taught by local painters and Gallery owners, Mike Mooney and C.C. Puckett. Other electives range from stage makeup to mask making to film acting to music theatre."

Cost for the week-long camp is $50 with some scholarships available for those with demonstrated financial need, courtesy of local businesses and civic organizations. For more information, call Ruth at 918-465-1762 or "just show up at 9 sharp for a really fun, and educational, week of theatre arts!"
