Area Students Sign Up For New Track Program
(Press Release 05-19-06)
Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information

After an absence of more than 16 years a renewed track program at  Eastern Oklahoma State College will begin again in August at the Wilburton college.

Eastern will be offering a “Walk-on” track program under the direction of former Eastern and Hall of Fame Coach Glen Stone. Stone says the program will offer developmental training for those high school students who want to improve their chances for scholarships at four-year colleges and universities.

Eastern’s track program in the ‘70s and ‘80s dominated state and national two-year college track. Eastern won ten national champioships with 192 atheletes earning All-American honors Stone says. “Hundreds of track and field athlets in Oklahoma have been denied opportunities to continue in the sport because state colleges do not offer the sport.

“Now the opportunity is here again for those not yet good enough for four-year scholarships. “We want to help give that opportunity once again to youngsters willing to sacrifice and work hard to better themselves and start on the road toward a college education. “Eastern is a quality institution of higher education and social development -- the perfect place to begin,” he said.
