(Press Release 10-31-06)

“Choose a career you are truly interested in. Find a job that will put a smile on your face. Then you will be happy,” explained KESC radio personality Doug ‘Dougo’ Sims while recently speaking to members of Eastern Oklahoma State College’s business club, Phi Beta Lambda.

In 1990, Sims enrolled in a required speech class at Eastern Oklahoma State College that changed his life. The class was taught by Ms. Lois Hintze.

“I was very shy. I did not want to talk in front of people,” he explained. “Ms. Hintze had a way of always making me feel good about my speeches. She always made me feel good about me. Her influence turned me from an introvert to an extrovert.

“One teacher, one person can totally change the life of someone. One turn in the road can send you in a different direction than you planned. I enjoy what I do!”

In April 2002, KESC Radio went on the air at Eastern. KESC is one of only six commercial radio stations housed on a college campus in the United States. It is one of four on college campuses that provides 100,000 watts of broadcast power.

“My cousin encouraged me to contact the station about a job,” said Sims.“I did and I have worked at the radio station for 4 ½ years.”

“The Dougo Show” airs from 6 until 10 a.m., Monday through Friday. Sims also provides play-by-play at Wilburton Digger football and basketball games. He also writes sports columns for the McAlester News Capital and Latimer County Today newspapers.

“I have had different jobs — some I liked, some I didn’t. But I never felt like I had truly found my niche until the radio.

“I am not a morning person. I have to get up at 5 a.m. and be on the air at 6 a.m. I have to love my job to get up that early!”

Sims encouraged students to “find something you really, really enjoy doing. And find a job that makes you financially secure.”

He told stories of attending a taping of “American Idol.” He relayed‘secrets’ of the popular television show. While in California, he attended tapings of the “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn” and the “Price is Right.”

“You are going to work for the rest of your life, getting up every single day. Don’t dread it.”
