Summer Arts Camp For Youth

Summer Arts '07 is scheduled for June 18-22 at Mitchell Auditorium on the Wilburton campus of Eastern Oklahoma State College as the second year for the expanded arts summer camp.

Young people, grades 2nd thru graduating high school seniors, are invited to the one-week camp which promises to be full of "dramatic surprises," according to Ruth Askew Brelsford, camp director.

The performing arts academy, co-sponsored by the Oklahoma Arts Council, Theatre Eastern, the Latimer County Arts Council, Wilburton Parks and Recreation and area businesses, culminates with a Showcase Performance at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 22, in Mitchell Auditorium.

"This is our second year of the new and improved summer camp," Brelsford says. "The college sponsored a summer camp in the '60's and 70's which was very popular. We have had many requests for an encore performance.

“When we were recognized in 2004 with the Governor's Arts Award for outstanding contributions to children's theatre, we wanted to increase our visibility and service to young people in the area. Last year was a very good year and we are all looking forward to a fun-filled week of learning in the arts."

Classes, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily, feature basic concepts in acting, music theatre, Shakespeare, stage makeup, dance, and painting courtesy of The Gallery at Wilburton. Tuition is $50 which includes all instruction and supplies as well as a cool Summer Arts t-shirt. There are scholarships available for demonstrated financial need.
