Journalism Students Win
Top Awards At State Competitions The Statesman newspaper and Mountaineer yearbook staffs at Eastern Oklahoma State College recently brought home top honors from journalism competitions, continuing a long-standing tradition of excellence for the journalism program. “Eastern’s publications have traditionally done very well at these competitions,” said Hank Mooney, Public Information Director. “For at least the last 35 years, the journalism program has placed in the top three for overall awards almost every year. “ At the Oklahoma Collegiate Press Association Eastern’s students are in competition against Oklahoma four-year universities and generally hold their own quite well.” The Statesman was honored with first place awards for Overall Newspaper at competitions at Northeastern State University and Oklahoma State University. While the Mountaineer received first place overall at NSU and tied for second at OSU. At the NSU competition held April 5, Eastern’s entries were judged against several other Oklahoma two-year colleges. In Tahlequah, the two publications came home with a dozen awards, including a first place win for On-Site Features Writing by Carla Perovich, Wilburton, and second place for On-Site Sports Writing, by Joseph Tyson of Clayton. The Oklahoma Collegiate Press Association hosted by OSU was on held on April 13 and saw 14 two-year and four-year universities compete. The newspaper and yearbook received 14 awards, including first place and second place for Feature Photography by Brian Duncan, Wilburton and Jana Chancellor, Talihina respectively.
