(Press Release 10-12-07)
Hank Mooney, Office of Public Information

More than 118 Eastern Oklahoma State College students will now be voters as a result of Phi Theta Kappa honor society registration efforts on the Wilburton campus.

Eastern honor society students competed with 14 other Oklahoma colleges and universities to see which college could register the most voters during the annual VOICE Voter Registration Contest recently sponsored by Oklahoma Campus Compact.

Oklahoma Christian University in Oklahoma City registered the most voters during the 5th annual state-wide drive registering 198 students followed by Eastern in second place registering 118 or 9.3 percent of their student body and Connors State College in Warner coming in third place with 71 students.

Together, 14 campuses registered 1,198 new student voters over the five-day period.

Established in 2000 as part of the Oklahoma Campus Compact, the object is to increase student civic engagement on Oklahoma college campuses.

PTK sponsor Brenda Kennedy said her PTK members “worked really hard to make this happen on our campus.

“Thanks to all the faculty that helped by spreading the word and having forms available for students to fill out not only on the Wilburton campus but the McAlester campus staff as well.

“If it had not been for the leadership of Eric Shaw, PTK president from Antlers, and Kalah Smith, PTK Service Vice President from Canadian, our efforts would not have been as successful. They were the driving force behind getting the students organized and the campaign underway,” she said.

Other officers this year include Randy Tipton, Stuart, vp of service; Mandy Atkinson, Wilburton, vp of leadership; Kara Haile, Savanna, vp of fellowship; Whitley Allen, Atlanta, TX, secretary; Jana Chancellor, Talihina, public relations and Student Senate Representatives Chie Shimizu, Takasaki Gunka, Japan, and Cole Dalmont, McAlester.
